Hello to my home state of New York!

I was born and raised in Western New York, have taken family vacations in the Adirondacks, received credits from three different SUNY schools across the state to obtain my undergraduate degree, and also spent a few months living and working in New York City for my internship, so there are many things I love about the entire state!

It was important to me personally to obtain a license in New York once I was eligible to apply for a reciprocal license, and now I am ready to serve private pay clients across the vast and diverse state. From Buffalo to Rochester to Syracuse, to the Southern Tier where earlier generations of my family lived, and the Finger Lakes where my family has a cottage.  From Albany to Northern New York, or perhaps whichever area you claim as “Upstate,” to New York City and Long Island, I can provide telehealth counseling to anyone physically located in the entire state.  I’d be so glad to start a counseling journey with you, whether short-term and goal-directed, or long-term to establish a solid counseling relationship to support you on your life journey.  Please know that I have been counseling clients in Florida with supervision since 2013, then was fully and independently licensed in 2018, so although my license in NY is new, I am not a new therapist. You can learn more about me and my experience on the Meet Your Counselor page.

New York’s licensing board has a few restrictions on my Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) license that other states do not. These restrictions are one of the many reasons I do not accept insurance and only take private pay.  If you find yourself in one of these categories, I absolutely know you will be able to find someone else who can provide excellent care. Here are a few clients I am unable to work with at this time per the State of New York Education Department’s Office of the Professions due to being an LMHC without Diagnostic Privilege in NY, even though I do have that ability and almost none of these restrictions in the other states in which I am licensed:

§ 29.15. Special provisions for the professions of creative arts therapy, marriage and family therapy, mental health counseling, and psychoanalysis.Unprofessional conduct in the practice of creative arts therapy, marriage and family therapy, mental health counseling and psychoanalysis shall include conduct prohibited by sections 29.1 and 29.2 of this Part and, in accordance with section 8407 of the Education Law, shall also include:
  1. in the case of treatment of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism, providing any mental health service for such illness on a continuous and sustained basis without a medical evaluation of the illness by, and consultation with, a physician regarding such illness, unless such licensed professional has been issued a privilege to diagnose and develop assessment based treatment plans by the department. Such medical evaluation and consultation shall be to determine and advise whether any medical care is indicated for such illness;

Due to this large list of conditions that New York has decided upon, I imagine I will most likely be working with clients located in New York state who are still in the primary group of clients I specializing in working with, which include those going through life changes or make decisions about their lives, those processing gender identity and/or sexuality authenticity, and those in open, non-monogamous, or otherwise polyamorous relationships.  If you do know, or think you may have, one of the conditions mentioned above in bold and would still like to work together, you would just need to let me know before we get started and complete a Release of Information form for me to be able to consult with your physician, who has, in theory, already completed an evaluation and diagnosis, per state licensing rules.

Please read more about how I may be helpful to you, my current rates, and check out my blog to learn more about me as a therapist and the practice of therapy.  You are welcome to reach out to me at [email protected] with any questions you have, to schedule a free 10-minute consultation call, or to set up an appointment.
